What to Do Immediately After Breaking a Tooth
While you're on your way to see us (or waiting for our call back), follow these steps:
Rinse Your Mouth
Gently rinse with warm water to clean the area. Don't use mouthwash—it can irritate exposed nerves.
Save Any Pieces
If possible, find and save any broken tooth fragments. Sometimes we can reattach them.
Control Bleeding
Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes. If bleeding doesn't stop, come in immediately or go to the ER.
Manage Pain
Take over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Avoid aspirin—it thins blood.
Protect Sharp Edges
If the broken tooth has sharp edges cutting your tongue or cheek, cover with sugar-free gum or dental wax temporarily.
Apply Cold Compress
Use ice pack on your face (outside your mouth) to reduce swelling—20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.
Avoid These:
- Don't eat on the broken tooth
- Don't expose it to extreme temperatures
- Don't try to glue it yourself with super glue (seriously, people try this)
- Don't delay calling us
Then CALL US IMMEDIATELY: (253) 537-9317
