What to Do Immediately After Breaking a Tooth

While you're on your way to see us (or waiting for our call back), follow these steps:

Rinse Your Mouth
Gently rinse with warm water to clean the area. Don't use mouthwash—it can irritate exposed nerves.

Save Any Pieces
If possible, find and save any broken tooth fragments. Sometimes we can reattach them.

Control Bleeding
Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes. If bleeding doesn't stop, come in immediately or go to the ER.

Manage Pain
Take over-the-counter pain reliever (ibuprofen or acetaminophen). Avoid aspirin—it thins blood.

Protect Sharp Edges
If the broken tooth has sharp edges cutting your tongue or cheek, cover with sugar-free gum or dental wax temporarily.

Apply Cold Compress
Use ice pack on your face (outside your mouth) to reduce swelling—20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.

Avoid These:

  •  Don't eat on the broken tooth
  •  Don't expose it to extreme temperatures
  •  Don't try to glue it yourself with super glue (seriously, people try this)
  •  Don't delay calling us

Then CALL US IMMEDIATELY: (253) 537-9317

Frequently Asked Questions

1How quickly do I need to get a broken tooth fixed?
As soon as possible—ideally within 24 hours. The longer you wait, the higher the risk of infection, further damage, and needing more expensive treatment. Call us immediately at (253) 537-9317.
2Can you fix a broken tooth the same day?
Yes! Call before 2pm Mon-Thu and we'll do our best to see you and complete repairs the same day. Most bonding repairs take just 30-60 minutes.
3What if my tooth broke on Friday or over the weekend?
Call and leave a message describing your emergency. We'll provide guidance and get you scheduled first thing Monday morning. For severe emergencies with uncontrolled bleeding or swelling, go to the ER.
4Does repairing a broken tooth hurt?
We use local anesthesia to numb the area completely, so you won't feel pain during the procedure. Minor bonding often requires no anesthesia at all. Sedation options available for anxious patients.
5How long do bonding repairs last?
Composite bonding typically lasts 5-7 years with proper care. Crowns last 10-15+ years. We'll discuss the best long-term solution for your specific break
